Summary: fdbootcd.iso for beta9sr2 appears to be empty (no files, no OS)
Product: Distribution Reporter: Eddie Anderson <saywhat@softhome.net>

Status: RESOLVED FIXED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2

Description:   Opened: 2006-01-02 14:08
On December 8 I downloaded the fdbootcd.iso image from the link in the
beta9sr2 readme (http://fdos.org/ripcord/beta9sr2/fdbootcd.iso). The file
was dated 11/30/2005. Since then I've tried accessing the data on that image
several different ways and have been unsuccessful every time. The essence of
every result is that there are *no* files on the cd image. Can this be?

I had no problem using the Tinyfdos ISO file from beta9sr1. It created
a bootable CD with no surprises. But the 12.3MB fdbootcd.iso for beta9sr2 is
not bootable when I burn it to a CD. Also, when I load that burned CD into a
drive and try to read it from DOS or Windows, I see a volume label but no files.
Smart Boot Manager 3.7.1 can't find an operating system on it either.

Finally I mounted the ISO image using SHSUCDHD (and SHSUCDX). It couldn't
find any files on the image. It also warned (when it mounted the image file)
that the volume size didn't match the file size (or something like that).

I see that the date on the fdbootcd.iso file is still 11/30/05 (so I assume
that the same file is still on the fdos.org website. I looked for an MD5
signature (to verify the copy that I downloaded was intact) but I didn't see any
MD5 list. Also I figure that the CD burning software would complain if the file
was corrupted enough to make it appear empty.

Am I overlooking something? Or is that iso file *really* useless? How many
times has it been downloaded since 11/30/05?

Thanks for your time and attention.

Eddie

I found a webpage that listed the MD5SUMs for FDBOOTCD.ISO, etc. The
copy of FDBOOTCD.ISO the I downloaded from fdos.org does *not* give
the correct MD5SUM. However, I downloaded FDBOOTCD.ISO from ibiblio.org
and it *does* give the correct MD5SUM.

I've downloaded the file from fdos.org org a couple of more times and
it is identical every time. Not only does it give the wrong MD5SUM, it is
also larger than the copy downloaded from ibiblio.org. The copy from
fdos.org is 12,944,246 bytes long. The copy from ibiblio.org is 12,875,776
bytes long.

Here's the CHK-SAFE report for the fdos.org version:

1.0-Testing should be used now.
